How to Reduce Trip Hazards at Home

A practical guide to identifying and removing common trip hazards around the home, particularly for older Australians.

Why Trip Hazards Deserve Attention

Falls are one of the most common causes of injury for older Australians, and many falls happen at home. The good news is that most trip hazards are easy to identify and straightforward to fix. A few simple changes can make your home significantly safer.

Common Trip Hazards to Look For

Start by walking through each room and looking for anything that could catch a foot or cause a stumble. Common hazards include loose rugs, trailing cables, cluttered walkways, raised thresholds, and wet or polished floors.

Fix Loose Rugs and Mats

Loose rugs are one of the most frequent causes of trips at home. Remove them where possible, or secure them with double-sided tape or non-slip backing. Ensure bathroom mats have a rubberised underside that grips the floor.

Manage Cords and Cables

Power cords, phone chargers, and extension leads often cross walkways. Reroute cords along walls, use cable covers, or rearrange furniture to keep cables away from walking paths. Consider battery-operated lamps to reduce the need for cords in high-traffic areas.

Keep Walkways Clear

Make a habit of keeping hallways, corridors, and the paths between rooms free of clutter. Shoes, bags, laundry baskets, and boxes should be stored away from walking routes. If you need to store items in a hallway, keep them against the wall on one side only.

Check Flooring Surfaces

Polished timber, wet tiles, and loose carpet can all contribute to slips and trips. Clean up spills immediately. Use non-slip mats in wet areas. If carpet is loose or buckling, have it repaired or stretched. Consider non-slip treads on stairs.

Improve Lighting

Poor lighting makes trip hazards harder to see. Ensure all walkways, hallways, and staircases are well-lit. Install nightlights in the path between the bedroom and bathroom. Consider motion-sensor lights for areas you use at night.
